What countries speak French?

My child has not learned French before, how will they cope?
Learning a new language is an exciting process. It can be a little daunting in the beginning, but EFIB now has a support structure in place to help students through this transition. There will be times in the first six months when your child will feel overwhelmed during the French part of the school day. This feeling begins to lessen as they begin to learn songs and words in French. It takes a child up to two years to become bilingual and sometimes longer if the language is not spoken at home. You will find that your child will understand French long before they speak it. They will also be reluctant to speak to you in French, preferring their native language when communicating at home. This is all totally normal. Your child will be starting to say little bits to their teachers and friends as their confidence grows. What is happening in their mind, is their brain is beginning to process two languages at once. When they learn French at EFIB it is as though they are a native speaker and hence become truly bilingual. It is different for every child, but eventually their mind grasps the French language and they begin to speak with proficiency and confidence. It is delightful to see this happen to our students at EFIB. It gives your child so much confidence when they know they have mastered this beautiful and challenging language. Enjoy the process!

What does the school do to help my child to learn French?
EFIB offers students in GS upwards, additional French classes during school hours. These classes are designed for students who are learning French as a second language and hence takes them through the basics of the French language. These classes rapidly improve a student's French and get them ready for the challenges of the CP (Year One). After school, additional tutoring is offered to CP students and upwards, to help them complete their French homework. For more information see Language Support.

Does the school have an active social community?
Yes, EFIB has an active social community. EFIB is a small school with a caring Parents and Friends committee. Social activities are organised for Mums to attend so that we can get to know each other better. Visit School News to see some of the latest things we have been up to!
